Rossport is a small village on the old section of Highway #17, called the Rossport Loop, just 2 hours East of Thunder Bay and 6 hours West of Sault Ste. Marie on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Originally a permanent Indian village named Bawgawashinge/Shallow Water, it was discovered by the Voyaguers in the Late 1600’s. The deep-water harbour is well sheltered from the open lake by a series of islands. A large sandbar connecting the mainland to the nearest island was the site of the large Indian community. In 1884, the Canadian Pacific Railroad was completed through Rossport, opening an avenue for shipping goods in and out. At this time, the village renamed Rossport, became a commercial fishing port. Today, Rossport has about 150 residents but it is no longer a fishing village due to the depredations of the Lamprey Eel. However, the docking facilities make it a popular haven for pleasure craft as well as a departure point for sports-minded people who wish to fish, hunt, rockhound or just explore and enjoy the many wilderness islands that extend from 15 km east to 60 km west of the harbour.
